June 22, 2005 - Sacramento, CA - Huge event celebrating 30 years of licensure planned for July 10 in San Francisco.

Acupuncturists, acupuncture school teachers and students,
and herb merchants will gather together with the “Father of Acupuncture,”
Former Governor Jerry Brown, and many Honored Guests, to commemorate the
30th anniversary of the signing into law SB 86 (Moscone) … the legislation that
began a new era of Traditional Oriental Medicine in California.

On July 12, 1975 newly inaugurated Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 86 (Moscone).
Since then Oriental medicine began its long and sometimes difficult journey into
mainstream medicine for the consumer in California.

Governor Brown continued to sign many important acupuncture bills over the years
and helped support Oriental medicine in California. After 30 years of hard work,
California is the leader in the Oriental Medicine movement ----- largely because of the
foresight of Former Governor Brown.

Regrettably, though Oriental Medicine has successfully mainstreamed into the fabric of
medicine in California, there are new obstacles emerging in the path of progress. After
vigorous compliance with the law for 26 years, suddenly the profession is under series
attacks … Educational improvements, primary care provider status, and qualifications for
insurance coverage are all under fire. Diagnosis rights are being questioned. Authority
to prescribe necessary laboratory tests and x-rays are being challenged. Life-saving
referrals to other medical professionals are opposed. Thankfully, the profession
continues to come together to fight to overcome these obstacles.

On July 10, 2005, the “30 Year Commemoration Event” luncheon will be held at the
Empress of China Restaurant in San Francisco to celebrate the 30 Year Anniversary of
the legalization of the practice of acupuncture in California. The event will express the
profession’s sincere appreciation for what Governor Brown has done for acupuncture.
Additionally, we are calling for the unity of the profession so that we may present a
united front to ensure that the public will continue to have access to this medicine, stay
politically abreast of relevant issues and strive for high educational standards, research
and public safety.
