AOMA President Michelle Lau and lobbyists Sandy Carey and Art Krause attended in person, and Executive Director Brian Fennen participated by phone in a meeting with Assemblyman Leland Yee and his staff regarding proposed amendments to AB 1113. CAOMA had made preliminary analyses of AB 1113, finding significant problems with the bill, and making specific suggestions for revisions.
After some discussion, Assemblyman Yee seemed agreable to CAOMA's proposed amendments, and directed his staff to continue working with us on the revisions. CAOMA lobbyist Art Krause, who penned and lobbied for the first dozen bills for our profession from 1975- 1985, offered his expertise, suggesting that we "keep it simple," and amend the bill only to insert "(a) To diagnose within his or her scope of practice." into section 4937.
Assemblyman Yee's staff and CAOMA will be running this language by all of the organizations for approval and support.
Nobody expects the CMA and other competing interests to sit quietly while we put our existing authority to diagnose into statutory law, so we will be counting on every acupuncturist to submit calls and letters of support.
Stay tuned.
