Former Chair of the California Acupuncture Board, Shari Asplund was reappointed to serve a second full term on the Board through July, 2005. Ms. Asplund has served on the Board since 1996, and is the only Board member to carry over from the Wilson adminstration, having been appointed by the Democratic California Sate Senate then, and again, now. Ms. Asplund had the strong endorsement of Senator John Burton of San Francisco, who is Senate President Pro Tem and Chair of the Senate Rules Committee.

Ms. Asplund has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska. She is the Outreach Manager for the NASA Discovery Program, located at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. She is a past chair of JPL’s Advisory Council for Women, and is currently active in several community organizations.

Ms. Asplund's 2001 position as Chair of the California Acupuncture Board was passed on to Dr. Pei Li Zhong-Fong for 2002.

The California Acupuncture Board is comprised of nine members, four public members, four professional members, and one physician. A professional seat and the physician seat remain open at this time. Seven members are appointed by the Governor, one by the Assembly, and one by the Senate.

Dr. Zhong-Fong now carries on the mission of the Acupuncture Board, which is "to protect and educate the public through appropriate regulation of licensure, education standards, and enforcement of the Acupuncture Licensure Act, which includes Oriental Medicine."

In its vision statement, the Acupuncture Board proclaims its commitment "to meeting the growing demand from the public for acupuncture/oriental medicine by providing information to the public so they can make informed decisions when to choose acupuncture/oriental medicine as an appropriate first treatment, and how to work as an equal partner with all health care professionals to provide the best treatment possible."
