February 7, 2002 - Sacramento - BotanicLab of Brea, California, issued an immediate recall of PC SPES and SPES, after the California State Department of Health Services found them to be contaminated with warfarin and  alprazolam.

The California State Department of Health Services issued a public health warning about two herbal dietary supplements, PC SPES and SPES, after they tested positive for the dangerous (prescription) drugs warfarin and alprazolam, respectively. The manufacturer of the products, BotanicLab of Brea, California, has issued a recall of these products to their costumers.

It is important that all health care providers notify patients as to the potential benefits AND risks of taking PC SPES and other Chinese herbal medicine products, and recommend consultation with a qualified practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine, such as a Licensed Acupuncturist or Doctor of Oriental Medicine.  Many patients who take herbal supplements believe that these products lack adverse effects, and may self-prescribe and exceed the recommended dosages, and be unaware of potential interactions with other herbs and drugs. Consumers need to be educated to treat medicinal herbs the same as they would treat over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, where potential benefits outweigh potential risks only as long as recommended dosages are not exceeded, and they are used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
